7 High-Fiber Cereals that Actually Taste Good

By: Tanya Jolliffe : 11/2/2009 12:23:59 PM : 314 comments : 120,198 Views

The high fiber cereals of years ago offered little taste for the nutritional benefit they provided. Today, that has changed and you can get a great tasting cereal that is also a good fiber source.

Fiber is an important part of a healthy diet. Not only does it aid in weight loss by helping you feel full and satisfied longer, it also helps reduce risks of heart disease, lowers blood pressure, and aids in blood sugar control. Many people need more fiber in their diet and breakfast cereal provides a great option for maximizing your daily intake by getting the day started with a fiber rich meal.

Consumer Reports tested eighteen high-fiber cereals which each contained 25 to 50 percent of the recommended dietary guidelines for fiber (based on a 2,000-calorie diet). Here are seven top tasting high fiber cereals that you may want to include in your breakfast meal planning to help you meet your daily fiber intake requirements.

  1. Kirkland Signature Spiced Pecan – This cereal is sold at Costco and provides a wonderful blend of grains, nuts and seeds with a cinnamon flavor as well as a nutrient rich option for the price with each serving costing about $.33/serving.

  2. Kashi GoLean Crunchy Fiber Twigs, Soy Protein Grahams and Honey Puffs – This cereal is a top rated nutritional value for price cereal offering 10 grams of fiber in a serving size slightly larger than the Kirkland cereal at a slightly lower price of $.13/serving.

  3. Archer Farms High Fiber – This cereal is sold at Target and offers a sweet crunch with toasted grains and a cinnamon taste along with 10 grams of fiber/serving.

  4. Kellogg's Raisin Bran Extra! – Offering 7 grams of fiber/servings, this cereal provides a balance of sweet and crunch from tender raisins and cranberries along with nutty wheat flakes and clusters.

  5. Post Shredded Wheat Spoon Size Wheat 'n Bran – Offers 8 grams of fiber/serving in a nutty grain cereal with unsweetened toasted wheat.

  6. Great Value Raisin Bran – This cereal is sold at Walmart and great for those that like the plain raisin bran they have always known and loved.

  7. Barbara's Bakery Ultimate Organic – This cereal provides an organic option which rated well for nutrition and taste.

Have you tried any of the cereals and if you have, which one is your personal favorite? If you have not, will you give one of them a try now – why or why not?

My favorite high fiber cereal is All Bran Strawberry Medley. And oatmeal.

I love the Kashi Go Lean--I couldn't believe the fiber content and the protein is also 13g per serving (1 cup) which is amazing for a cereal--most only have about 3-6g per serving from what I've seen. It seems to be the best balance of nutrients for me. It's nice to be off to such a great start after only one meal, plus I seem to not feel as hungry after this compared to other cereals (except oatmeal of course). The Fiber One honey clusters is okay, but I really didn't like the caramel one--way too sweet and sickly tasting.

I love Raisin Bran. Too many of the cereals have a high sugar content, or if it is reduced, the sodium content is high.

I hadn't even considered that the Great Value brand cereals could possibly taste good. Thank you for the heads up concerning that possibility!

Be blessed!

When I eat the shredded wheat, which is rarely, I usually add half a banana to it so that it it palatable. It's not "bad," but to me it is very bland.

I love Fiber One, where's that, and Uncle Sam's? The Costco cereal looks great, and Kashi and Barbara's are always great-tasting healthy cereals.

I was disappointed that the article starts out quoting fiber and price per serving. Then it changes to just fiber per serving. The last couple entries do not list fiber or price per serving.

Tried the Kirkland Signature Spiced Pecan and I really love it. Tried Fiber One years ago...on everything...salads included. I guess I went wild and ate beyond the recommended amount. Well, no need to tell you what happened, but I was one step away from calling laser md for relief. LOL!

THE BEST??? Trader Joe's High Fiber Cereal. 80 Calories, 5 Calories from fat. 9g of Dietery Fiber, 3g of Protein. PLUS... it only costs like $2.88 or less a box!!! I buy 6 boxes at a time so I always have it on hand and I keep one at work in case I need a snack. NO HFC's, NO Artificial Sweetners. I eat it without milk... just DELICIOUS!

The Fiber One cereals are great and I believe should be included here. All that I have tried taste great and are very good for you. I also typically add a sliced banana, as well to add some potassium.

Add me to the Fibre1 fan club. Love it with 1/2 cup blueberries. I've been enjoying it now for a year. Whoever wrote this list should definitely include it.

I agree with Sweetpea05. Fiber One's Honey Clusters is great and affords 13g. dietary fiber in 1 cup. some only afford you 1/2 c. but not this cereal.
The taste is like having dessert. I use 1t. cinnamon, 7-walnut halves and soy milk in mine. Yummy indeed.

Why does this site have a vendetta against Fiber One? I swear, it's always left out of healthy cereal articles.

I have a bowl of Fiber One Honey Clusters every morning and switching to it was one of the best food decisions I've made!

I agree with Fibre One. I eat the original. It has 56% of you daily fibre requirements per serving and has NO ADDED SUGAR and no artifical sweetener. It is naturally sweet, made with graham flour.

My favorite on that list is the Post Mini Shredded Wheat. Off the list, I love Kashi Autumn Harvest. But usually I just make my own Craisin Bran with plain bran flakes plus Craisins. My husband does it too, and he puts pecans or other nuts in his (I currently can't do the nuts, but he says it rocks).

You missed Fiber One!!! They have a line of great tasting high-fiber cereals. I rarely reach my daily goal for fiber, but without high-fiber cereals, I wouldn't come even close. When I get the munchies, I try to reach for one of these cereals--it only takes a little to fill me up.

I really like the Post Shredded Wheat and Bran cereal. I mix in 1/4 cup of blueberries and 1/2 of a med banana, it is filling and delicious. After having the wheat and bran I no longer like the regular shredded wheat, it just tastes to plain. I also like this cereal because it has no sodium and only 1 gram of sugar.
Recently, I bought Trader Joe's O's. They are high in fiber and protein and do not have soy ( soy tastes like yuck), which I am allergic to. It tastes okay, but a little bit on the sawdust side with all of the fiber. But still it is worth the benefits of getting in your fiber and protein.

Why Doesn't anyone mention Sodium content in some of those cereals? I never eat a full serving of Raisin bran or Cherrios. Especially since my husband needs to watch Sodium content. I'll combine 1/2 serving of a high Na cereal with Shredded Wheat or Kashi Go Lean. I'll sometimes mix 3 cereals together[1/2cup+ 1/4 cup + 1/4 cup]
to get high fiber. I try to get least 10 fiber in cereals + 1 Tbsp. of flaxseed Mill and 1/2 banana or other fruit in season. I mix Flaxseed Mill in the hot oatmeal along with raisins and cinnamon. I sprinkle a generous amt. of cinnamom in ALL cereals ;its good to stabilize Blood Sugar.

I like Kashi Good Friends but am not even sure if they make it anymore as I don't really look at the cereal aisle these days.

The sugar counts on a lot of the cereals mentioned in the blog are quite high.

A really good, old-fashioned low glycemic cereal is Uncle Sam's.

I like the Kashi Organic Cinnamon Harvest. It has 6 gr fibre and says 0 gr sugar. But in the ingredients it lists Evaporated Cane Juice. Does anyone know what that is?
The cereal isn't sweet but the cinnamon gives it good flavor.

Like a few of the other posters I would have liked to see a comparison of the amount of fiber and the calorie content of a serving. For myself, I am almost exclusively hooked on Kellogg's All Bran Buds. 12 gms of fiber packed into a 1/3rd cup serving which gives only 70 calories.

Ok I am glad some buy plain old Cheerio's. I love Cheerio's just the original plain cereal. My ultimate fave (not high fiber) is Honey Bunches of Oats Almond, but alas too high in sugar and not high enough in fiber! I am pre-diabetic so trying to get a jump and the best!

I prefer to go really frugal and get the store brand of Puffed Wheat or Puffed Rice and then add what I want in terms of dried/fresh fruit or nuts. Plus I know it'll be vegan. With the others, gotta watch for the whey, dried milk fat, etc.

I have to say I'm really not much of a cereal eater either however the Kashi cereals are really good and they are high in fiber. I only know this b/c I went to the site and requested a free sample. Add that with some fat-free over the moon milk and you got yourself a healthy and delicious meal.
