Today's guest blogger is Shauna Reid, otherwise known as Dietgirl. In 2001, after seeing her gigantic white underpants waving in the breeze, Shauna decided enough was enough. It was time to lose weight. Then 351 pounds, she could barely walk down the block. Seven years and 175 pounds later, the 31-year-old Australia native is happily married and living in Scotland. (See the before and after photos here.)
How did she lose half her body weight and keep it off? Ultimately, the same way many SparkPeople members did: Through perseverance, hard work and moderation. Here, she offers 20 tips for those trying to lose weight and get healthy.
First, start with the big picture.
Write down your goals and be specific. What do you want to change? Where do you want to be a year from now?
Next, focus on the details.
Every day we make dozens of tiny decisions that can spell the difference between whether we lose weight or gain. Do you pick the muesli for breakfast or the chocolate muffin? Do you spend twenty minutes on the couch or twenty minutes on a brisk walk? Small changes can add up to huge results.
Start exercising
--no matter what your fitness level. At 25 stone I could only shuffle to the end of the street, but I gradually built up to the whole block. Within a couple of years I was running! Don't compare yourself to others, just work within your limits and take it slow and steady.
Eat breakfast.
A wholesome breakfast makes me feel smug, satisfied and determined to stay on track all day. My favourite is porridge, livened up with grated apple and cinnamon, or chopped banana and teaspoon of peanut butter.
Be kind to yourself and your body.
You don’t have to look in the mirror and chant, “I love me! I am beautiful!” but at the same time yelling at your thighs won’t encourage your weight loss efforts.
Make your treats miniature.
Instead of banning dessert, I choose smaller portions – like an apple crumble baked in a ramekin dish or a small bar of Green and Blacks chocolate. I get my sugar hit without dangerous leftovers!
Lift weights.
It won’t make you bigger – it’ll make you svelte and strong! If you’re worried about loose skin, resistance training is the best thing you can do to tone your body as you lose weight.
Planning is crucial.
Every Saturday I take ten minutes to plan our meals for the coming week. I choose from a list of 25 easy, tried-and-true recipes, so it’s quicker to cook than phone for a takeaway.
Buy your groceries online.
It saves time and you’re not tempted by all the sights and smells of the supermarket. Or tortured by your screaming children.
Feel your emotions, don’t feed them.
In times of stress it’s tempting to bury your feelings in cake – better to feel bad about binging than tackle the real issue! But try to find non-edible ways of coping – I highly recommend kickboxing classes.
Go Greek.
If you’re a cream or sour cream fiend, 0% or 2% Greek yogurt is an excellent substitute. It's low in fat, protein-rich and incredibly creamy. Dollop into meringue nests and top with fresh fruit. Splodge onto a bowl of chilli. Swirl into butternut squash soup.
The best exercise is the one you enjoy.
So what if your best friend swears by aerobics at dawn? If you’re a shift worker or just plain grumpy in the morning, this will never suit you. Choose an exercise you like and do it when it’s most convenient for you – this way you’ll stick with it.
Stock your office pantry.
It's much easier to ignore the vending machine when I’ve got half an orchard sitting on my desk and a drawer full of oatcakes, nuts and seeds.
Have a cuppa.
When hunger strikes and it’s not meal time, I make a cup of tea. This gives me time to figure out if I’m really hungry or if I’m just bored or cranky or upset. Herbal tea is great – experiment until you find one that doesn’t taste like grass clippings!
Have a moan.
Losing weight isn’t easy, but you don’t have to feel alone in the struggle. Start your own blog, or sign up for a message board. Remember, we’re all in this lardy boat together!
Put the scales in perspective.
Don’t fret over small fluctuations – focus on all the healthy things you’ve been doing for your body. Get out the tape measure or have a pair of “measurement jeans”, so you’re not dependent on the scales for feedback.
Be adaptable.
Make your weight loss plans fit around your life, not the other way around. Sometimes circumstances will change – a new job, a family crisis, moving house – and suddenly your usual routine doesn’t work. The trick is to be flexible and know when it’s time to tweak your methods.
Set a non-scale goal.
Why not train for a charity 5k race or challenge yourself to do ten push-ups? Focusing on fitness means I don’t fret about the numbers so much. And all those endorphins make me feel less inclined to go on a chocolate bender.
Accept that sometimes it’s going to suck.
Despite your best intentions, there will be days when you fall into a bag of crisps. But long-term success is about persistence, not perfection. It’s picking yourself up when you fall, over and over again.
Don’t wait to be “skinny” to start living your life.
If you have dreams of traveling or writing a book or learning to scuba dive, don’t think you need a smaller bum before you deserve them. Your life is happening right now – so forget about your wobbly bits and jump right in! Content used with permission from Dietgirl.
Shauna's book is out now!

Great tips. Can't wait to start incorporating them into my weightloss plan!!
I was so happy to see this article here! Shauna is awesome -- her book is so incredibly inspirational. And not just inspirational, but also truly interesting. I didn't have to force myself to read it, instead, I couldn't stop myself from reading as quickly as possible to see how things worked out for her in the end.
This is definitely one of my favorite blogs. So many tidbits of wonderful advice, from someone who knows the ropes, most definitely. She also is kind enough to share some magnificant photos on Flickr. I really enjoyed the blog. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself. From one Scot to Another! LOL

thank you for the ideas. I truly appreciated the tips from someone who has experienced the challenges of losing weight and making life changes to be healthy.
I rarely buy a book at retail but this one is in such high demand, I couldn't find it on a book exchange or at a lower price online. I can now say, having come within 50 pages of the end, it was worth every penny!!! My only regret is that it ends. I guess I'll have to surf around the net and see if I can find Shauna's continuing adventures in her online blog?

That is so funny, the other day as I was sitting at my typewriter (computer) and had my window cracked because there was a cool breeze coming through, I heard a couple of teenage girls that were cutting through our yard comment on our laundry that was on the line to dry, "look, that is so ghetto," one of the girls said, and curtly laughing "look at her underwear, THERE HUGE." That was it, I got so angry that, first of all, they were using our yard like a short cut drive through to get to the store, and TWO, that they had the audacity to comment on what was in our yard! BUT, it did bring to my attention my underwear, and like this story reads, that is what inspired her, and WILL continue to inspire me to this journey of health and wellness!! Great story and thank you for sharing!
I read the first 36 pages of the book online and I just cried and cried because I related to your early life...the wanting to be a good girl to avoid explosions at home and the secret eating I also picked up from family which all started the emotional eating cycle. I also enjoyed your humor and analogies. I may buy the book. Thanks for the tip and congratulations on your triumph and marriage.

I just ordered this book from Amazon.Com. It isn't expensive if you get a book that has been already read. I can't wait to get this book.

These ideas are great. I'm excited to print out this list and start checking them off.
Great blog, and so many great ideas. We all know what we should be doing, but seeing them on a list like that will really help to keep me on track. I will be printing this out and keeping it close to my desk, so I can see it every day. (I think I will make several, and keep one on the refrigerator too, and give one to my daughter and some of my friends. My favorite one is the last one: to not wait til I lose all of my weight before I start living. I have waited so many years and put off doing so many things, that I have missed out on a lot of life. So now, I have made up my mind to make up for lost time. I have a long list of things that I have not done, and slowly but surely I will get them done! Sky diving, riding in a hot air balloon and learning to scuba dive are just a few. It should be a fun summer!
I love to hear stories about successful weight loss. Yours is wonderful, and inspirational. I am going to find your book and pass it along to my workout buddy, She gets down on herself so I think this will be an uplifting thing for her. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
I am doing just about everything correct.....I am being patient as I walk this journey because somehow I lost the keys the keys to the car to get me there faster. LOL
Loved your Book just finished it today. I started it as soon as I got it and loved the "lardy boat" we're all in comments, and the large knickers and can relate to both of those. I was really inpired by your sucess enough to get more enthused about this journey I started the first week of January. Spark People and your book are both great for inspiring and helping with the coping on the days the scale won't move at all in spite of staying on the diet, and exercise plan.
Need to up my exercise and make sure to do it every day, but have improved a lot since January.
your advice is terrific. it surely helps me with what i struggle with on a daily basis: maintaining a balanced perspective, an even keel, a long-range goal towards which every day is a step in the right direction. dealing with the immediate gratification, want-and-need-it-now head-set is hard; however, with you and coach dean, i know i can do it. thank you for sharing your insights.
Wow, this is definitely one of the best blogs I've read in a while. I've started lifting weights, doing pushups & overall improving myself over the last 2 weeks & when i weighed this morning - I've gained 2 lbs. I wanted to cry, I wanted to throw something & most of all, I wanted to give up. Reading this blog has made me realize that I absolutely don't want to give up, b/c when I was stretching, my husband said, "Wow. You're really losing weight, honey. Look how flat your stomach is" So I grumbled over to the mirror, lifted my shirt up & was like, "Wow. He's right. My baby's belly's almost GONE!" I agree with all of your strategies - because it isn't "dieting" - it's a lifestyle change. Taking those "2 bites" of that brownie can have as much calories as an entire apple - which do you think is more filling? So Thank You for keeping me from being (as) frustrated. Excellent strategies, & overall you have a wonderful outlook!!
