Food on the Run: Corner Bakery Cafι

In our ongoing Food on the Run series we like to look at different fast food restaurants and offer our readers information to help them make healthier choices when they dine away from home. Today we look at a restaurant that Health magazine recognized as one of America's top ten healthiest fast food restaurants and Parent's magazine has named as one of the 10 best fast-casual restaurants in America.

With recognition like that, there must be healthy alternatives when dining. Right?

I'm in Texas (DFW) and my daughter and I LOVE Corner Bakery. It's a nicer choice than Subway and the price reflects it, but at least I feel like I have a lot of healthy choices!

I really like Corner Bakery but unfortunately my wife and daughter don't. They are a little expensive IMHO and they took my favorite soup off the menu though.

I don't think I've ever seen this restaurant in my travels, not in New England or in the US when traveling for work. Wouldn't mind finding one sometime.

Cornery Bakery is one of my favorites. I normally look at their website and call in my order. I had that the Asian Edemame salad and the three lentil vegetable soup on Thursday. The soup/salad combo is a great option.

SPARK YOU'VE MISLED ME!
Today I wanted to grab a bite for lunch when I was at the mall and thought, "hey, corner bakery, I read that Food-on-the-run. I know they're low calorie" So I noshed on a delicious sandwich. I came home to track it and found something spark failed to mention. THIS IS NUTRITION INFORMATION FOR HALF A SANDWICH. GRRRRR! Could you not have mentioned THAT somewhere in the blog?

I have noticed that a lot of times when a person try out a new cafe, a new exercise toy, or what-not it is rarely targeted at budget minded people. I wonder if there is a site besides this that helps people lose weight in a cheap way.

None of those near me either. We have Paneras and Atlanta Bread. When I go now, if I need to do it on the run, I do a blueberry bagel with natural peanut butter and for lunch Chicken noodle soup and a quarter of french baguette. With the exception of what Spark notes I try not to eat carbs after 6pm. I've checked their nutrition and it sounds better than what you guys have.

I love eating there. All their nutritional info is online and as you can see there are several healthy options rather than just one or two.

Try it out if you have one in your area!

And the swiss oatmeal can most likely be made at home as well. This one of my favorite places and that tomato basil soup is delicious. Had a bowl the other day in the rain. the croutons are my treat. I like them because they make them fresh. Not sure of the calorie though. Also you dont have to get the chips with the sandwich. they will substitute carrots

We have one in Philadelphia. In the summer I love their swiss oatmeal. But there are a lot of temptations so I have stayed away since I have started eating healthier. But with this information I will be able to go and make healthy choices and not feel deprived of their homemade coffee cake.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Corner Bakery Cafe but since my doctor has gotten more strict with my diet I can't eat there as often as I'd like. My favorite is the California Grille Panini but once I looked up the nutrition info I was really surprised that a sandwich with no meat on it would be 700 calories. Would love to have Chef Meg do a recipe makeover on that one!

Missy758--Please be careful when slipping substitutes in food. People on high blood pressure medicine can NOT have salt substitutes (potassium chloride). It negates the effect of their medication.

I sure wished we had one here in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area. I do have to agree on the sodium content. I am wondering how they can win awards with that content in one item. There always seems to be a down side, either great taste and now calories and high in sodium or no taste and very low sodium. I am wondering why they can't use the NoSalt in most of these items that they make. I have always wondered why places don't use it as it tastes just like salt. If you use it in soups and other foods you make, there is no difference. I once fooled my father in law who was heck bent on salt.. I changed it in the salt shaker and he never knew until I told him.. his high blool pressure is more important than the salt and my test proved it. I do wish tho that we had one of those eateries in our area. Maybe one day someone will have something like that here!

We don't have any in Ohio. A new place called Green Dog Cafe (Cincinnati) recently opened and I've been meaning to try it out. It has vegan and vegetarian choices--which always seems like it would be super healthy. I wonder about the sodium though. I really wish that restaurants would start trending towards low sodium. Or, at least have some options that are low. I just recently heard that the meat I've been purchasing (at the grocery store) is probably LOADED with sodium and I never knew. From what I understand if it is packaged--it is injected with a brine solution which is loaded with sodium. I've heard buying directly from the butcher is a much safer option. I'm going to have to start doing that.

I think it’s odd that Health and Parent’s magazines give awards for the top ten in America to a restaurant with locations in only 10 states. It’s okay that my state is excluded because the sodium is much too high for my healthy lifestyle.

I think they have some very healthy choices, but it's still kind of a dangerous place for a dieter. They serve those yummy potato chips with all their sandwiches. And when you order and pay for your food, you have to stand right next to all those delicious looking scones, brownies, and my personal favorite -- the individual-sized bunt cakes. There's lots of temptation there, but if you have strong will-power, I guess you can eat well. And their ingredients do seem very fresh.

Duly noted that the sodium IS high (and "good eye" to all of you who caught that!) However, I am happy to see spark showcase this restaurant as it does serve up a terrific variety of fresh and healthier... healthier-than-fast-food-and-most-o
ther-restaurants...! The sodium levels are not unique to this restaurant. Unfortunately, when dining out (which hopefully is an occasional treat and not a daily occurence) this is more often the rule. The fresh ingredients and lower calories earn Corner Bakery a spot on my "better options" dining out list!

I love Corner Bakery but haven't been since I changed my way of eating. I used to order the chicken pesto sandwich, and a bowl of loaded baked potato soup when that was available, so not really the best choices.
