Megan Fox Doesn't Work Out, Eats Once a Day

By: Stepfanie Romine : 7/17/2009 2:42:31 PM : 181 comments : 22,279 Views

Megan Fox is a huge movie star and undoubtedly a beautiful woman, but she's also an example of how appearances can be deceiving.

Though she's been lauded as "the sexiest woman in the world," she probably won't be named "the healthiest" or "fittest" woman in the world any time soon.

The star of the Transformers franchise said in an interview that she only eats once a day, smokes and rarely exercises. She actually had to gain weight for her big role.

"I don’t have a special diet, I just sort of exist and survive," she said.
According to the Examiner, she said: "I’m 23. I’m prepared for when I hit 28 and I’ve got to change my whole thing. But, for now, if I can get away with it, I’m going to do it."

Fox, and other celebrities who are thin and unfit, proves that what you look like on the outside isn't always reflective of your overall health and well-being.

Skipping meals is a really unhealthy habit. When we're trying to lose weight, it's tempting to cut calories dramatically or eat just once a day. Experts say that does more harm than good. SparkPeople recommends eating three meals a day plus snacks to keep energy levels up and blood sugar stable. Going too long between meals can lead to crankiness, irritability and even dizziness, and you're more likely to overeat when you're ravenous. (I'm a real grump if I've gone too long between meals!)

At times, it's easy to lose sight of the goal. This journey we're on is about more than reaching a number on the scale or pulling on those skinny jeans.

It's about lowering our cholesterol, strengthening our cardiovascular systems and achieving our goals. Exercise helps us slim down, sure, but it improves our mood, helps us sleep more soundly and allows us to relieve stress, too.

It's not all about the number on the scale or the label inside your dress. Pro and Olympic volleyball player and new mom Kerry Walsh knows that. She said recently that while she's shed much of her pregnancy weight, she's tired of being "skinny soft" and needs to rebuild the muscle that she lost.

I have battled poor body image since I was a teenager, and I still have my struggles, like most women. At 5'10", I'm just bigger than most women, and when I'm out with friends, I still size myself up against other women occasionally. Yoga teacher training helped tremendously. While I might not be a size 2 (or a 4 or a 6!), I can now do more than 10 REAL pushups. I can hold a headstand. I can do some really cool arm balances. And I can lift, move, carry and hold almost anything without asking for help. That, my friends, feels much better than smaller dress size ever would! Don't you agree?

The next time you compare yourself with someone else and bemoan the size of your thighs or the curve of your waist, think of how fulfilling it is to walk up stairs without getting winded, to cross the finish line of a 5K or to carry your groceries with ease.

"Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me."

From Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou

Megan Fox says she knows that she'll have to exercise as she ages to keep her trim physique. However, let's hope she realizes the other important benefits of exercise (and kicks the smoking habit) sooner rather than later.

Do you know anyone who's naturally thin but out of shape? What nonphysical benefits have you noticed since you started your healthy journey?

I kind of look at it that it is just as judgmental to demean Megan Fox (actually I don't know who she is as I don't care about celebrities) and label her "thin and unfit" because some reporter quoted her saying something silly about her lifestyle as it is to demean people who are at a heavier weight than she is. She doesn't look anorexic, seems to be saying she's just not into weight or fitness and eats when she likes, she looks ok to me from the picture just as celebrities and models who are heavier look ok to me from their pictures (look at the plus size uber model Emme, who is not so well known these days) ... people are all different and there should not be this critical focus all the time on the size of other people.

I have never been really skiny or fit. I decided I needed to change things and do a maraton this year since I turned 25 this year. I have several super thin and cute friends and it puts a smile on my face when I talk about how far I've come with my jogging. Less than a year ago I could only jog 2 miles and now I'm up to 12 miles and I can out jog my thin friends. I'm very proud of my progress and have learned to stop paying attention so my size. I may not be thin but I'm fit.

Until I was 25, I weighed about 95 pounds at 5'5". I smoked, drank, and usually ate two meals a day with no exercise. I have gained about 40 pounds since then, and want to get back down to 120. Even at that, I feel healthier now that I've quit smoking, am balancing my diet, and am working out regularly!

I suppose if my career depended on it the way hers does, I probably wouldn't have gained the weight to begin with as I would have been more careful. It does seem to sneak up on ya, though.

I hope for her sake that she sees that smoking is a horrible & addictive habbit that wrecks all kinds of havok & that when she hits 25, she too has to face reality. Best of luck to her & all the starlets who think they are invincible...

I've always been one of those skinny-out-of-shape people. My secret? I have a really small appetite and, with almost no hand-eye coordination, never got into sports. My undiagnosed (until recently) exercised-induced asthma also helped me develop my distaste for exercise. However, as I've gotten older (I'm 31), when I lose a few pounds I noticeably lose muscle mass. My abs, which used to have a bit of definition, are just sad--even when I'm at a "goal" weight, I'm not in bikini-shape. And in terms of strength--my overweight sister has no problem picking her kids up, while I struggled with lifting them up when they were still in toddler-hood.

Spark has taught me how to eat right, and I'm still trying to take its lessons on exercise so I can not only look good on the beach, but look and feel good for the rest of my life. Because, as Megan Fox will discover, 23 doesn't last forever, but you've got this body for the rest of your days.

At 23 I was very thin also weighing in at about 108 or so, but I am 5'2. I had a little boy at lost the weight quickly. Like her though I did not exercise or eat all that healthy. It was hard to do with the hours I worked I waited tables for 9 hours a day and many times had to pick up double shifts. So yeah I usually ate one meal a day which I tried to fit in all my nutients in. Now I am a few years older with another child and I did not lose the weight like I did with my first one. So I really started to step it up, Eat right, and keep active. I do not weigh 108 lbs anymore but I am still thin now after my hard work. I feel much more healthier than I did in my early 20's, not to mention I had to work for this body. I guess I used to share in her attitude, I was young and already thin but sparks people has really helped me change that.

Thin & Unfit = not for me!

Sure Megan is attractive, but we all can afford to be more health concious AT ANY AGE!
I love her quote: "I’m 23. I’m prepared for when I hit 28 and I’ve got to change my whole thing. But, for now, if I can get away with it, I’m going to do it."

What makes her think that 28 is the magical age that one needs to concern themselves with their health?

After reading this, I lost a lot of respect for those Hollywood starlets! :(

I have to agree with what some of the other ladies have said: time is the great equalizer. If you've lived unhealthy for decades, making the "leap" to better health in your 30s is going to be an uphill fight. Of course, she doesn't have a family with young children, a job that keeps you in an office for 40+ hours a week, and she can build fitness time into her contracts.

I've had weight and fitness issues for 26 years. Binge and starve, manic exercise, eating my way through depression....all of those poor choices I made caught up with me in my 30s. Now I'm 40. I'm 5'9" with a large frame and I'm toting around about 20 extra pounds that don't seem to want to go away (20 years of thyroid disorder isn't helping!). BUT I run, I've studied martial arts for nearly 5 years now and have a 2nd degree black belt, I play tennis and I just finished learning how to work out with kettle bells for strength training. By and large I make healthy food choices (though my calories fall short of where they should be for my age and activity level - I'm working on it!). I could probably outrun her and I'm nearly twice her age.

My adult average size is 12. I've been as small as an 8 and as large as a snug 16. Right now, I'm in a 14. I would rather be a strong and healthy 14, than a stressed and spindly 8. My BP is on the low side of normal; cholesterol and blood sugar have always been healthy.

And at the risk of sounding catty, or like a cranky old broad, so many of the 20-something starlets look alike! They are generically pretty and slim, but is anyone going to know their names in 20 more years. Will they have the staying power of Emma Thompson, Meryl Streep, Dame Judi Dench, Dame Maggie Smith, Dianne Wiest, Diane Keaton, Nicole Kidman?

While she is beautiful on the outside, I am a believer that it's your heart and attitude that truly radiate to make you "the sexiest woman"...as most men would agree, it's confidence, but a poor attitude changes your looks on the outside. I'm 28 and while I don't have Megan's body, I know one thing, when she hits 28, she's going to look older than I do now! I have exercised since 21 and am glad as it will carry with me for life and it won't be a habit that one day I have to say: Oh, I should start eating better and exercising. It's a way of life and a lifestyle worth having.

My sister was one of those people who was tall, thin, never exercised and could eat what she wanted (literally). She had done runway modeling and anything revolving around modeling. She hit 25 and started to gain and those habits keep sticking with her. While she's not fat, it's easy to see that there is no health-quality.

My biggest non-physical changes I notice is better attitude, better sleep quality, better moods - just all around happy! And, physically, I wouldn't give up this body for even 1 day in the life of Megan Fox - I have so much more (non-monetary things) than she may ever have...and for that, I feel extremely blessed!

Just so happens that I took my grandsons to see Transformers last nite. I would not have even known who this girl is if not for some of the headlines on the front of the rags at the checkout in the grocery. Her first appearance in the movie last night I thought she might have been a transformer herself, those lips!! Definitly not human. Not my idea of beauty, and what happens to these pumped up lips when these girls get older? Do they have to get them refilled?

This woman is definitely unhealthy and sharing her "secrets' will probably get a large new group to try to do as she says she does. Grr-rr. I once worked with someone for a very long time. She ate in front of others, but in working with her, I soon came to understand that she rarely took more than a bite or two of anything that she "ate." It has been 5 or 6 years now, that my friend who lived more on coffee and cigarettes (even though she had tried to break that habit for a long time) passed away. I got a surprising Early Sunday call to tell me that she had a heart attack, was revived once but didn't hang on. She was a beautiful woman with an awesome career jump coming for her at age 46 or so. What a great loss to the community and to the world and to her family. Someone mentions her almost daily when we are working, and I wonder if she ate a complete meal or snack if things might have been different. I would never say that this was her fault, I just wonder if she had had someone helping her to monitor her habits if she would have made a change,

This is why I never follow the celebrity diets. Because although appealing on the outside I'm pretty sure they destroy the insides. They look fine now but just wait. Ive seen older people look wayy better than their celebrity peers because half if not most of the celebrities hide behind tonsss of makeup and age uber quickly. So uhh yeaa no thank you.

Gosh you would think in this day and age Ms. Fox would be wise enough to see she is not going to get away with that behavior long. All of us know that if we had be taught the right eating and learn to enjoy exercising , we may not be were we are now. When I was her age and allthrough school my nick name was Olive Oil , ( POP EYES GF) Then I got PG had my thyroid removed and I have been fighting weight for close to 46 years now. oh yes and diabetic, So if Ms. Fox reads any our letters. that's one of the main misconceptions that I have had to deal with when starting my weight loss program...I see all my skinny friends eating whatever whenever and it didn't affect them as much as it affected me. I know many people that are small but never work out, smoke, eat unhealthy. They complain about walking to the store etc, because they get winded. So that makes me feel good that I can walk and run while they are sitting on the couch watching TV. Even though I am bigger than I should be right now I know i am healthier then alot of thin people out there. That makes me work harder to lose this weight because when I do I know I will not only be thin but healthy.

Some people are naturally thin, especially in their youth. I know I was one of those. I weighed 104 pounds and had an hour-glass figure of 36-21-35 when I started college. I ate what I wanted when I wanted and never exercised. It took 3 children and 2 miscarriages for my metabolism to begin to change. Everyone's body is different and not everyone who has a gorgeous body starves themselves. Chalk it up to genetics, I guess. Some people just don't have to work at it ~ at least, not when they're young.

Learning how to properly care for my body has been very difficult. When I topped out at 184, I had almost doubled my college weight. It's an ongoing process for all of us to look past physical appearance to see the real person. It's just as wrong to make assumptions and judge someone for being beautiful as it is to make assumptions and judge someone who is overweight or not what our society considers attractive. I believe we all need to look deeper, just as we would want others to look deeper to see who we really are.

I have a friend who is super skinny and eats nothing but fast food, frozen dinners and pop-tarts! She doesn't smoke but she loves to bake in the sun so she is a "healthy" golden brown. I am so scared about what is going to eventually happen to her (karma has a way of evening things out sooner or later). What is worse is she is old enough to know better (over 40). Megan has youth on her side and is at an age where they all think they will live forever. If we stopped worshipping at the altar of youth, thinness and beauty maybe people wouldn't be determined to do stuff like this.

I think she's lying when she says she doesn't work out. She has a great body -- she's pretty fit, not just skinny like a model would be, for example. It's NOT a miracle at all, C'MON! SHE'S 23! I had her figure (or even better, really) till I turned 30 and then the extra pounds started to gain. I could eat what ever I wanted(mostly chips) and still had a waist with 19"...
Being sexy, curvy and beautiful DOES NOT mean the same as being FIT though! Now I'm 42 and I sure need to control what I eat and train hard to keep my figures BUT: I'm more fit than when I was 20, that's for sure.
But hey, my opinion is, she would be clever to START NOW, not like when she'll be 30...It would be soooooo much easier and I have to say I'm sorry I didn't start when I was 25 - I could easily be a fitness pro nowadays.
It's almost same as using the eye cream...is it any use to start when you already HAVE deep wrinkles around your peepers...eh? OK, getting fitter is never too late though, even the little bit is better than nothing. :D

The problem that Ms Fox isn't ,is the years of nutritional neglect that she is subjecting her body to. I have no idea what she is eating for that one meal but she certainly isn't getting all the daily allowance for vitamins and mineral and fiber in one meal. It's hard enought to get them in three meals. And for a women not to consume enough calcium in her twenties will only lead to osteoporosis later.

I don't know her personally; I don't know if she is kind, mean, superstitious, gullible, smart, dumb, trusting, cynical, skeptical, conservative, liberal, what kind of car she drives, her hobbies, or anything substantial about her and I doubt anyone else here does either. I don't know if I met her in real life if I'd like her or not. The only movie I saw her in was Transformers that my daughter wanted to see because she is fascinated in robots and I'll tell you she looked great in it and held her own as an actress though her role admittedly didn't demand much.

Is she a bad person because her beauty comes too easily?

The problem that I have with the naturally slim
(aka - society size appropriate)
is that they JUDGE people who don't look like them.
My father did this all my childhood.
I was ridiculed and made fun of albeit I ate the foods they fixed for me to eat.
I was never fat...
but, I was not skinny like the rest of my siblings.
It was not an easy life.
Today I am still not slim.
BUT, I'm strong and am willing to move furniture and heavy things for those skinny ones around me who don't have the strength to do it for themselves...
and I smile every time I curl those 25# 'ers. :o)

My DH is one of those skinny people that made it well into his 50's feeding his sweet tooth, but still wearing the same (small) size jeans. Last year (after years without a checkup), his cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure were up. But he's done amazing things for himself this year and brought all those numbers down! He's eating much more healthily...and has added more incidental exercise to his life. I am *so* proud of him. One of my best friends from college is super tiny and curvy (still can buy youth clothing because it's cheaper). But she eats far worse than I do and can't stick to anything healthy. Just the other day, she attempted to "get healthy" by not getting her loaded Starbucks drink and drank water. But by noon, she was over it and at Starbucks and eating heavy amounts of Indian food for lunch. Only recently has she started walking a little more than usual. I'm interested to see what will happen as we grow a little older and move into our 30s.
