Poll: Would You Eat Deep Fried Butter?

By: Nancy Howard : 9/9/2009 5:08:51 PM : 875 comments : 23,300 Views

As many of you know, I live in the great state of Texas. However September is the one time of year I am almost embarrassed to say where I am from.

Why September, you may ask? This is when the great State Fair of Texas opens the gates to some of the wackiest and most processed foods one will ever come across. Each year the entries for new food vending treats to be sold and served during the fair become more bizarre by the minute and this year is no exception. It's as if the more wacky the food, the more publicity is gained for the fair.

This year's entries include of all things deep fried butter, deep fried pecan pie, deep fried peaches and cream, and deep fried peanut butter cup macaroons. And this is no joke. Many foods that are now commonly found at state fairs around the country have their humble beginnings in Texas.

Many of us are fully aware of fried Twinkies, fried Snickers, and fried OREOS. But have you ever heard of a fried banana split, Texas fried Cookie dough and yes, even fried Coke? And if you are curious as to how one fries Coke--it is actually a Coke-flavored dough that is deep fried and smothered in a Coke-flavored syrup, topped whipped cream and cinnamon, all for a whopping 830 calories, or the equivalent of me having to run well over 8 miles just to burn off the calories.

With Texas having one of the highest obesity rates in the nation, not to mention having the city of Arlington being named in Men's Health Magazine as the fast food addicts capital, one would think that we could offer healthier options at the fair.

There comes a time when the novelty is long gone and it is time to move on to healthier choices. These foods certainly fit the bill of Dr. David Kessler's food description in his book The End of Overeating. Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite of fat, on sugar, on salt, on fat, etc.

My challenge to my state and to fair officials is to offer healthier choices and enough with the fried foods. And trust me, you will NEVER see me eating deep fried butter, no matter how hungry I get even if it comes with a free deep fried Coke!

Have you ever tried any of these foods at your fair? Would you be willing to try these foods just to see how they taste? If you have tried them, how did you like them? Were they worth the calories?

That sounds nasty! I can't imagine what that does for your cholesterol levels. I'm from Texas and wouldn't even think of trying it.

I'm intrigued about how they can deep fry butter?? It would be interesting to taste, not to eat a whole bunch.

We don;t tend to get such 'delicacies' at our events in Australia so much. Maye I just don't know about them though....

Yuck! It's not even sensible to deep fry butter and eat it whole...unlike deep fried cheese cake (which I had twice in my lifetime and need to stay away). I guess if you want it you can eat it, but think of the crap you are putting in your body before you do.

Sadly, I probably would try it. Which is the root of all my problems ;). I'll try any type of food and haven't met an enemy just yet !!

It is not only in Texas--we just had a fair in MA and one of the highlights was a burger that consisted of two fried doughnut halves as the bun, a bunch of greasy slabs of bacon, and a half pound of ground beef! I don't know how this sounds good to anyone....I definitely didn't try it, and I would probably not try deep fried butter either!

I might try deep fried butter if the right combination of people were with me to share it. But it really doesn't even sound appealing. What kind of mind even thinks up such a thing - lets take some fat and fry it in more fat? One taste to see what the hype was about then I'd pull a fresh apple from my bag and enjoy a healthy food.

The Illinois State Fair, every year, has a butter sculpture of a cow. This year's included Abe Lincoln reading a book beside the cow. It was fun to look at and is better as a sculpture than in our bodies.

I would never even try it. I don't really get the whole deep fried thing when it comes to foods. Even veggies. Why take a perfectly good food, and fry it? Only Americans would come up with such a gross idea! No wonder we are so obese. (Yes, I am an American).

I wouldn't now that I am trying to eat healthy but back in the day... shoot yeah! If it was deep fried or covered with gray, I would have eaten it. Now it is the exact opposite!

And if you are curious as to how one fries Coke--it is actually a Coke-flavored dough that is deep fried and smothered in a Coke-flavored syrup, topped whipped cream and cinnamon, all for a whopping 830 calories" That... is just not right.

I would think that deep fried butter would taste like a biscuit with butter melted on it. My mom always says "If you never try it, you'll never crave it" so I wouldn't try it, because if I did like it, I would probably crave it down the road.

Alas, I've never made it to the Texas State Fair. I don't think I'd really try most of the deep fried goodies. We seldom buy food at any of these places because it's too expensive. If I did eat it, the guilt would probably kill me...

Thinking of eating fried butter..hmm.. I am a bit of a foodie.. and tempted to try and see how it tastes. But that would be a once in a lifetime and I will have a story to tell for a long time.

No. I saw the deep fried butter on Paula Deen's tribute to butter episode. Made me never want ANY butter again.

We are a nation obsessed with unhealthy, processed, fried, sugary, empty calorie foods and it's seriously doing a number on our children. I work in preschool and the number of 4 year olds coming through at 100 pounds plus increases every year. If that's not child abuse I don't know what is. (sadly, I DO know what is, but raising a child to be obese should be ranked up there w/ corporal punishment in my book)

Hell no! Even if by some miracle it was the best thing I had ever tasted (which lets face it, I don't think so) I would not want to try something that disgusting. That's the epitome of junk food.

I too am from Texas and we spent the whole day at the fair the last day. Last year I did try the deep fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and the fried oreos. This year since I am dieting I only had a corn dog. I did see the deep fried butter and would never even consider it. YUCK

I saw this on Oprah and wonder why our nation is a bunch of obese people? Why are we obsessed with fried food instead of showcasing fresh fruits and veggies and why in such a rich country do we import our veggies and fruits from other countries that have 1000s of unheard of fruits and veggies we can even get access to like choclate bread pudding fruit from Australia yumm and we could strenghten our economy-

At one time I would have tried almost anything, but - while I'm still pretty sure that you can make anything edible with batter and a vat of hot oil (for most people, and definitely who I used to be) that wouldn't even have made fried butter sound palatable.

Don't go to the Texas State Fair if you don't want to eat fried food. Simple answer. Fairs are simply a traditional place to eat food that is delicious but bad for you. And come to that, it's once a year and you spend all day walking around anyway- I know, I've been there. Let loose! Enjoy some deep fried Oreos. They're terrific.

I am also from Texas (Dallas to be exact) but I am currently living in New York. I couldn't believe when I heard about fried butter being the "thing" at the State Fair this year. I actually heard about it on Oprah's episode about the Texas State Fair. The only two things I have to get a bite of each year are the corn dog and the funnel cake. And i seriously mean a bite! As good as they are, they aren't worth all the calories. So would I ever try fried butter?? NO WAY!!!

I would never try these foods, but I might have done when I was a kid. I loved elephant ears, those are deep fried and coated in sugar, yum, and sold at our local fairs and our weekly Saturday Market in town. But, they don't taste as good to me now as they did as a kid. I wonder if my taste buds changed or if it's also that the ingredients changed, there are more strange man-made ingredients and less normal natural ones, maybe. Oh the thought of deep fried butter, why?

I have to admit i would try one of these things...I love food and have a thing for trying anything once. That said after eating something deep fried I'd most likely get a stomach ache and feel "guilty" for eating something with so many calories.
