We Ate It: Kashi Honey Sunshine
Unlike most American kids, I was never allowed to have sugary cereal. Cheerios, Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes (usually the store brand) were the norm in our house. Sometimes, though, my mom would buy Quaker Corn Bran, which quickly became my favorite cereal. (Seriously, what kid's favorite cereal was high-fiber corn bran? I was one odd child. I digress…)
We recently tried a cereal that reminded me of my old favorite: Kashi Honey Sunshine. The taste is as sweet and wonderful as the name. I think even my mother would approve of this one!
Kashi Honey Sunshine
Serving size 3/4 cup
100 calories
1.5 grams fat
no saturated fat
no cholesterol
140 mg of sodium
A whopping 6 grams of fiber
6 grams of sugar
2 grams of protein

Our thoughts:
"The little corn-y pillows are sweet but not too sweet. They remind me of a cross between Quaker Corn Bran and Cap'n Crunch (only without the buttery aftertaste). They're sufficiently crunchy in milk, and the 3/4 cup serving, combined with some soy milk and blueberries, keeps me full until lunch.
The first ingredient is whole grain yellow corn meal, and there's not a single ingredient I can't pronounce!"
"Kashi calls this cereal 'Honey-kissed Seven Whole Grain Cereal Pillows.' Well, these are so good I want to dream of these little honey-flavored pillows."
"This was like a healthier, less sweet and more natural version of Cap'n Crunch cereal! It had a similar taste and texture but wasn't overwhelmingly sweet like Cap'n Crunch is. I liked the flavor and the fact that it had about 6g of fiber per serving, but it's low in protein (2 grams/serving), and didn't really fill me up."
"The Captain’s Healthy Cousin. I’ve always been a fan of Cap’n Crunch but also tried to avoid it for the most part since it’s not the most healthy cereal option out there. If you’re looking for a healthy alternative that still tastes great you’ll want to give this a try!"
"I think is my new favorite cereal. I really like having cereal in the morning, both for the taste and to have a higher-fiber meal to feel full all morning. I like a little bit of sweetness, but not too much. This cereal was just right!
In addition to eating with milk in the morning, I think a small cupful dry would be a great snack."
Retail price right now is $3.79. The good news is that when you sign up on the Kashi website, you can get coupons for their products!

I'd try this one, I like Cpn Crunch EXCEPT for the after taste, so this might be the kicker!

I'm a little wary of this. Kashi cereals have rarely pleased me, and I don't like Cap'n Crunch. Maybe if it's on sale I'll give it a try, because the numbers sure do look good. - 9/9/2008 1:31:11 AM
