We Ate It: VitaTop Muffin Tops

By: Stepfanie Romine : 1/26/2009 1:53:17 PM : 138 comments

Did you ever see the Seinfeld episode with the muffin tops? They are the best part of the muffin, for sure! The folks at Vitalicious know that, and they've created lighter versions of almost every muffin imaginable.
Unlike the 400-calorie-a-pop giant muffins at your favorite coffee houses, these muffins are all about 100 calories, little to no fat, and contain at least 5 g of fiber.

We tried a sampler pack of the muffins.
What they say:
"VitaTop muffin tops have all of the healthy benefits of our delicious VitaMuffin- - now even more convenient to carry and eat on-the-run. The VitaTop, a "one-hand" satisfying snack food with the portability of a bar, is easy to eat anywhere, anytime. At your desk or on the road, these handy muffin tops fit conveniently into a purse, briefcase, work out bag, backpack and lunchbox."

What we say:
SuperSampler Pack (100 Calorie Brownies & 2-ounce Muffin Tops)
Deep & Velvety VitaBrownies
I had one of the brownies and it was good. It was nice to have a sweet that was lower in calories, high in fiber and tasted good. It was a bit dry but not so much so that I could not enjoy it!

Low Carb/Sugar Free Velvety Chocolate VitaTops
This is a good substitute for traditional chocolate sweets that might help quell the craving and won’t wreck your diet.

Low Carb/Sugar Free Banana Nut VitaTops
I thought these were really good! Very moist, and I liked it a lot. These were like banana bread but a little heavier. I'd eat this again.

Double Chocolate Dream VitaTops
I tried the “double chocolate dream” – good chocolate flavor, really rich, would cure any chocolate craving. It was very dry (as you’d expect something like this to be). Overall, it was exactly what I’d expect out of a 100 calorie snack, and it gets two thumbs up.

Deep Chocolate VitaTops
This was definitely chocolatey. I liked it. It was small, but it was just enough to keep me full for the rest of afternoon. I'd probably eat this again.

Fudgy Peanut Butter Chip VitaTops
To die for! My complaints would be: the chips were only on top. However, overall, for less than 100 calories, this is one awesome snack.

Golden Corn VitaTops
I dunked this in some chili, and it was pretty good. I don't know if I'd eat it on its own, but it was a nice, low-calorie cornbread substitute!

CranBran VitaTops
This was a pretty good muffin. For a 100-calorie snack, it's a hit!

AppleBerryBran VitaTops
It was "berry" good. This has lots of fiber, which is a good thing. It was slightly dry, but that's OK because it's much healthier than the average muffin. I like that the muffins are made with some organic ingredients.

MultiBran VitaTops
I love bran muffins, but this was not what I expected. The texture was slightly more dense than a typical muffin. I thought it was very filling, which is good because it only had 100 calories! I wanted to slather this with jam or peanut butter. I think most people would like this. It's a great way to get more fiber.

BlueBran VitaTops
Although I can clearly see blueberries throughout this, I couldn't taste any blueberry flavor. The texture isn't bad--about what you'd expect a whole wheat muffin to be like. It's surprisingly filling for its small size and low calorie content. It isn't exactly good, but it isn't bad either. It's just "there." It has sort of a strange taste that I can't place. If I were to be blindfolded and then given this to eat, I would not know what I was eating. But the nutrition and ingredients aren't that bad, so I suppose that if you need a more tasty way to force yourself to eat more fiber and whole grains, you might enjoy this. I would not eat it again.

$35.99 for the sampler pack (2 of each muffin top, plus four brownies);
Sampler packs available online and individual muffins and samplers available in stores

Vitalicious (makers of VitaMuffins) sell VitaTops baking pans, so even those who, like me, don't eat ready-made VitaTops can easily have that "tops only" experience. As a lacto-vegetarian, I use, and very much like, the VitaMuffin mixes, made with egg replacer, and baked in VitaTops baking pans.

I don't like their brownies at all, but I like several of the Vita Tops and have them every day. They are very filling. I like the raisin bran, banana nut or golden corn ones for breakfast. The deep chocolate ones are great - I'll warm one up and put a scoop of Edy's slow-churned ice cream on top. It makes a great sundae! Got that tip from a Weight Watchers member.

I eat this for breakfast, with a 1/2 serving of peanut butter spread on top. I keep a box in my freezer.

Hah, funny...I just read the Spark article about inulin, and wouldn't you know it, that's how vitatops get their added fiber. I tried these last year, and due to the wheat gluten and inulin, I had serious mood swings (I know, I'm a freak, but gluten does crazy things to me), and they gave me terrible gas (from the inulin, I suspect). I ended up giving the whole 4 boxes to my mother in law. Knowing her, they are probably still in her freezer.

I make the Applesauce Oatmeal muffins recipe found here on Spark...93 calories, great taste, all natural. I freeze them and heat them up for a quick, filling snack. Whole foods, all the way, baby!

I like the cranbran, they are great toasted with a dab of Brummel and Brown. The double chocolate--not so much. They are expensive. So for now I will make my own and freeze them.

I love these...I purchase the mixes they sell and make them fresh at home. They are cheaper that way and less "dry" because I can control the amount of time they bake. Sign up for their mailing list and you get offered discounts....you can also get discounts by joining their fan page on F.Book.

They are quite expensive, but our Publix store had them in the freezer section, buy 1 get 1 free. They only had banana nut and corn. The banana nut gave me quite a bit of gas, but the corn muffins are very, very good! I wish they had some chocolate, but I was too late and they were gone. Can't wait to see another sale on these.

I tried the Vitatops but weren't too thrilled with them so I want to sell them. I have 26 of them (8 Choc mint, 7 Deep Chocolate, 5 Triple Choc Chunk, 4 Banana Fudge and 2 Blue Bran) I paid $45 for them but I'm just asking for $30 since I just want them out of my hands because I'll never eat them. I'll pay for the shipping too. If you're interested, e-mail me at chinachick509@yahoo.com. Thanks.

I have bought these several times. The Banana Nut are wonderful. I also like the various chocolate ones. I haven't bought them for the past few months because the shipping is high, but once the weather cools down, I'll order them again (I think they've come out with a chocolate mint one). The only drawback is they have to be frozen so unless you have a large freezer, you can't really stock up.

You may be able to find them in grocery store in either the frozen breakfast section or the frozen healthy foods section. I keep them frozen in the freezer and nuke them in the microwave for about 10-15 seconds with it still in the wrapper but with the wrapper open, it makes them bit moister. I have been eating these for a few years now and love them, any time I travel, I find a location that has them and buy some so that I don't have to worry about eating an unhealthy breakfast when I know I will be eating out probably for lunch and dinner. I think they keep 1-2 days in the fridge.

I must be one of the only people not terribly impressed by these. I`d read so much about them and living in Canada, they only became available a short time ago. I jumped at the chance to buy them even though I found them outrageously expensive. I was SO disappointed in the size AND the taste. I will stick to my All Bran bars for snacks.

I've been eating Vita Muffins and Vitatops for years but all the varieties you mention aren't available here. I wish they were. The muffins used to be larger (maybe they still sell that version somewhere) but now they have them for 100 cals a muffin and I like these, but I like the tops better as they are like a giant soft cookie/cake treat but filling and healthy. My favorites are the deep chocolate (with chips in it), blueberry and cranberry orange. I would like more flavors available locally as it would be too expensive for me to order them online with shipping; thy are quite expensive just to buy at the store, but worth it now and then.

I love vitatops and vita brownies. The brownie with the chocolate chips and pomegranite is better then the one with the nuts. Deep chocolate vita tops are my fav. I always heat mine so the chocolate melts and if I have it for breakfast I squirt some "I can't believe its not butter" spray on it. Delish!

I had to check their website to get nutrition facts and ingredients -not present in your article. To my mere surprise, I found out they are actually supplements in disguise.
Some score 50% on many added vitamins. With 50% of iron for 1 muffin, you can easily go past the normal intake, and have an iron overdose in case you indulge daily with those "cookie-supplements".
And, as many persons already take their (not always necessary) daily dose of supplements -this functional food can be quite an explosive and dangerous cocktail on the long run!

these are THE best and because they have no preservatives they need to be microwaved for 5 secs to be warm and fresh out of the oven tasting. I usually buy the mix so I can make my own, because what's better than a fresh baked chocolate chip muffin that is only 1 point!

Ok the vitatops muffins and brownies are to die for! Hungry girl had a buy 20 get 20 free, so I bought them, you keep in the freezer they are not suppose to sit out more than 24hours. I'm doing weight watchers and these are only 1 point, so for a sweet nightime snack I put some sugar free dark chocolate pudding on top of a chocolote vita-top, and fat free cool whip. It is so yummy and satisfying! I have even warmed up a top in the microwave and throw some coolwhip on it.. These are definately a staple to have at home when trying to fight the urge to splurge on sweets.
