We Drank It: POMx Iced Coffee

When we heard that the pomegranate juice purveyor POM was selling coffee, we were intrigued and slightly perplexed. Pomegranate isn't a fruit flavor that we thought would mix well with coffee. What would it taste like? Why mix coffee and pomegranates? Would it be fruity?

We were proven wrong. The coffee is made by POM, and it does contain the antioxidant power of pomegranates, but it does not taste like the Persephone's forbidden fruit in the least! It's only available in a few markets for now, but we wanted to be ahead of the trend.

We've got plenty of java junkies around the office who jumped at the chance to try a cool new coffee.

What they say:
POM Wonderful announces the launch of POMx Iced Coffee, available exclusively in New York City and Whole Foods Markets in the Northeast and Atlantic States. With a potent dose of caffeine and healthy antioxidants, POMx Iced Coffee is a sophisticated energy drink for consumers who seek an energy boost but who typically avoid the excess sugar and artificial ingredients associated with carbonated sodas, coffee beverages and energy drinks.

POMx Iced Coffee does not include or taste like pomegranate juice, but comes in two creamy and delicious flavors: Café au Lait and Chocolate. …
Each bottle of POMx Iced Coffee contains a Healthy Buzz - a stimulating 175mg dose of caffeine and enough POMx to equal the antioxidant power of an 8 oz. daily dose of POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice. POMx is the most potent, antioxidant-rich pomegranate extract available and is made exclusively by POM Wonderful through a patent-pending process from pomegranates grown in their central California orchards. Because of the high level of naturally occurring polyphenol antioxidants found in Wonderful variety pomegranates, POM Wonderful Pomegranate Juice and POMx have been shown through clinical studies to be beneficial for optimum health, particularly in regards to heart and prostate health.

What we say:
"I just tried the Café au Lait flavor and it was great! Tasted just like something you'd spend more money and more calories on from Starbucks or something, but this way there's some anti-oxidants and everything for the trouble! So, all in all, I'd say 10 out of 10!"

"If you're a fan of mocha coffee drinks I'd be willing to bet you'll like the taste of this drink AND you'll get the added bonus of the free-radical-fighting action (instead of loads of fat in your coffee drink). "

Cost: $2.99 per 10.5 oz. bottle

Nutrition: 170-190 calories a bottle; no fat
(While that’s a bit high, it's fewer calories and less fat than a full milk latte and about the same as a bottled Frappucino drink.)

I might try this, although I'd be much more inclined to just make iced coffee myself (I like it unsweetened) and have a glass of POM's juice, instead.

Sounds wonderful but too much money! I am a Coffeeholic but this drink seems a bit high on the calorie side and the price is prohibitive also.I drink many POM products and I'm happy with the nutrition value they offer.

I am a Coffeeholic but this drink seems a bit high on the calorie side and the price is prohibitive also. So I think I will stay with my home ground organic coffee. And save the cash/Calories for other things I incorporate in my diet.

I hate even the smell of coffee, so I will pass. Besides I'm way to frugal to spend $2.99 for 10 oz. of drink. That nearly buys a gallon of milk.

POM also packages Pistachio Nuts, haha ... This is something I might buy on a rare occasion, and hopefully on sale!$$$$ I have a similar problem with their pomegranate juice ... in order to cut the calories I'll only drink a 3-4 oz juice glass of the stuff. At Christmas I used it in combination with another juice to make my cranberries, in which I include chopped apples, oranges, and other fruit. But I do have a tendency to forget about it once it's opened and on a fridge shelf ... which at $6 for the small bottle is really a waste since even refrigerated it doesn't have a very long shelf life.

I'm not a coffee drinker, so this wouldn't be on my list. Neither would it make the list, based on the calories - as someone in the blog said, I don't drink my calories.
