I hated P.E. in school and in high school 1963-67 we had it t days a week. It was boring! I hated playing basketball since I was only 5'4" and the tall girls had the ball all the time, etc.
I think kids need to learn YOGA or Tai Chi as that would really help them know something to relieve stress.

Ditto... the food article about Pollen's book rules to eat by.

The toe cruncher article was just what I need to read & could practice immediately. Great!

I enjoyed many of these articles. I was tickled by the one on snacking because I feel I do a good job if my snacks are close to 1/4 of my day's calories! It was fascinating to read that it isn't necessarily a good thing to each so many mini-meals - that really surprised me. However, even if we don't eat any snacks, we aren't going to be in the post-absorption state very long, except for after dinner. However, this article gave me something to think about - maybe it would be good to have some days with only three meals and see how that feels compared to mini-meals throughout the day. Hummmm...

That phys ed story really got my interest -- I think it's ridiculous to withhold diplomas from the obese at the college level, because college students are legal adults and therefore make their own choices. Younger students, however, are the parents' and teachers' responsibility, and it IS important to provide PE classes that encourage and foster life-long love of fitness and activity. The schools here in VT approach that, with x-country skiing in winter, personal fitness units focusing on either strength or agility, and lots of recreational opportunities. But there's still a big emphasis on sports skills (such as soccer dribbling, or shooting in basketball), which do NOT provide an intense workout or an idea of how to be active and fit for life.

Thanks for the links. Love the toe crunches and missed the Brooke Hogan article earlier this week when it was posted.

Thanks for using "piqued" correctly in context too :)

I found quite a few of these articles very interesting.

I applaud Brooke Hogan for taking a stand. As much as I enjoy the women's fitness magazines, I've learned that they photoshop their covers dramatically. They have a very PC explanation, but it boils down to the fact that they're doing much more than just erasing a zit.

The toe scrunches are one of the feet exercises I do when I'm seated on an airplane to keep up my blood flow; now I'm going to do it much more than just when I'm traveling.

The next time I go to the store, I'm going to make sure I have all the ingredients for that 3 minute oatmeal cookie! It looks like it could be a great snack while helping me with my sweet cravings. I also love that the nutritional information is included; it makes it easier for me to log.

Snacking can be a serious problem for me if I'm not careful and think before I snack. I think snacking should be planned because random snacks do add up and sabbotage progess.

I found the Beer Can 'false advertising' article & Brooke Hogans airbrushing issue interesting.

I also think the "Teach Your Children Wellness" school has a good idea. However; withholding diplomas for anyone over weight until they take a fitness course should apply to underweight & average weight people too. Why not send our College Graduates out into the world with a well rounded figure so they can earn well rounded figures in their careers!

Interesting collection of articles. I will read Food Rules...will reserve it at the library right after this post! And I will practice the toe exercises to strength my base. Loved the fact that they came from so many different places...some of which I will revisit. Thanks for the interesting post.

Thank you for the freedom from eating every 3 hours! Whew. I always found myself to be a failure when trying to follow that rule. Especially on work days.

The cookie and snack articles caught my eye as one says we eat too much and the other says here eat a healthier alternative to what you prevously ate by following a replacement of an old food with a better one.

The snack article caught my eye. I don't think snacking/grazing is a bad idea at all. The problem is the WHAT is being snacked on. I have been a yo-yo grazer most of my life and it does work.

I hope Brooke runs as far from the rest of the family as she can possibly get. Then, and only then will that young lady even begin to learn what a normal, healthy life is. Stopping the airbrushing is a step in the right direction.

I've never forgotten this one model on a magazine cover that I looked at for some women's health or fitness magazine. I actually looked closely and when I figured the proportions of her body in my head, I realized that she was so thin in the picture, and her ribs were so far from her hips, that she shouldn't have been able to hold up her own torso. She looked like someone had stretched her stomach out like a piece of taffy. The thinness of these women isn't unattainable because we don't have personal chefs and trainers, it's unattainable because it's physiologically impossible.

The 3 minute cookie recipe sounds good! I can't have it now due to the bland diet I'm on due to some stomach problems right now, but I printed it out to try later. I will post about it in my blog when I do.

Under "Rules to Eat By" I've read the book and I think there was an excellent question posed. Without access or budget to a farmer's market or budget to buy organic all the time, what is the best bang for the buck organically?

The questioner posed organic chicken and eggs.which made a lot of sense as the best places to spend money.

The article about snacking caught my eye.

The snacking/grazing way I eat now is actually how I lost so much weight. I started eating more often! although, I also am eating the same amount of calories, just spread throughout the day.

Too often people can mistake eating more often with eating more calories! And that is not the way it's meant to be.
