Wii Fit: Is it Really a Workout?

By: Nicole Nichols : 1/27/2009 11:13:00 AM : 598 comments

"For far too long, video game consoles have limited themselves to being fun and entertaining. But with Wii Fit, the sky's the limit." That's how a parody video made by YouTube user SARCASTICGAMER opens. I recently came across this spoof on the Nintendo Wii Fit ads and just had to share it! Whether you are a Wii Fit fan or don't get what it's all about, I think everyone can appreciate the humor in this video. But all jokes aside, I think it does bring up some valid points that may answer the question: Does Wii Fit count as exercise?

If you have trouble viewing the video below, click here to see it on YouTube.

Here are some of the highlights that I wanted to point out and discuss.

"You'll love leaning side to side with Nintendo's Wii Fit. And don't miss sticking out your leg."
I have to agree that there is a lot of standing in place when it comes to using the Wii Fit. Even when I reviewed the Jillian Michaels' Fitness Ultimatum game, I was surprised to see that you literally stood on the balance board without lifting either foot to "run" in the game. It seemed a little weird to me. Why not just run—or even walk—in place? Running on the Wii Fit clearly isn't the same as running in real life. However, exercises like Wii boxing require more movement and simulate the real thing in a fun, heart-pumping way.

"Wii Fit combines the perfect balance of barely moving and doing mundane things."
I laughed a lot at that line. Doesn't anyone else find it funny that pushups in real life are hard, boring and real work, but pushups on the Wii Fit are suddenly supposed to be more fun? If doing pushups on the Wii Fit is the only way you're going to do pushups, for example, then I don't see any problem with that. But if you think that you're going to have fun doing them while watching a virtual trainer on the screen, you might be surprised to find that they're just as boring and tough on the Wii Fit as they are in real life.

"Instead of having your kids go outside and play to get exercise, why not have them stand right in front of the TV?"
While I realize that not every child is an athlete and that many children live in unsafe neighborhoods where they can't play outside, I have to agree that playing real games outside is way more fun and beneficial than pretending to play with soccer balls and hula-hoops indoors. While I adamantly believe that kids are better off playing Wii Fit than traditional, sedentary video games—after all, all physical activity is more beneficial than sitting still—it is no substitute for real sports and recreation.

"Standing in one place has never been more fun than with Nintendo's Wii Fit. Find out today why people all over the world think they're getting exercise with that little white thing you stand on. It's simple. It's easy. And you don't have to do anything."
OK, here's comes the cold, hard truth. In my professional opinion, most (but not all) Wii Fit games and "exercises" aren't a good substitute for traditional workouts. However, whether your Wii Fit workout counts as "exercise" or not depends on three factors: how hard you're working, how long you sustain that intensity level, and how fit you already are.

The important thing you need to distinguish is the difference between "activity" and "exercise," which many people tend to confuse. These are two separate things. Not all "activity" counts as exercise. For example, you are "active" when you play miniature golf, wash your car, take the stairs at the office, and—in my opinion—when you play Wii Fit games. All of these pursuits will help you achieve an active lifestyle and burn more calories than being sedentary. But they won't take the place of exercise.

Workout guidelines are very specific. For something to count as cardio, you have to elevate your heart rate to a specific level, sustain it for at least 5-10 minutes, and use your large muscle groups in a rhythmic way, like when you run, walk, dance or swim. All three of those factors must to present for something to count as cardio, for example. That means things like Wii boxing could count, if you're working hard enough and sustaining that intensity long enough. But other things like Wii hula hoop don't (it doesn't involve your major muscle groups and might not elevate your heart rate high enough).

There are specific guidelines for strength training, too, like doing enough repetitions to reach muscle fatigue, doing a variety of exercises, and continuing to progress (increase) your resistance level. While the Wii Fit does allow you to progress a little bit, there comes a point when you'll reach the highest level offered and will no longer benefit from doing the same selection of exercises.

Many of the Wii Fit exercises won't meet all of those guidelines for all people. There, I said it! But before you get upset, remember what I said above: It depends on how hard YOU work, and yes, all physical activity is beneficial, even if it doesn't fit the standard definition of exercise. I'm going to continue to review new Wii Fit games as well, because I think they're all a little different in terms of intensity and variety. Some offer more true exercise options than others, and I'm on a mission to find the best Wii Fit workout there is!

What do you think? Do you think the Wii Fit offers a good workout, or is it just fun and games? Did you find the humor in that video like I did?

On Wii Fit running you DO NOT run on the white platform. You hold the controller in your hand or put it in your pocket facing the tv. On Free run you set the timer for 20 minutes or more. Running in place fast for 20 minutes is a great workout. I run much faster than when I'm outside and have to look for tree roots, breaks in the sidewalk, rocks and so forth. It's more like a very fast treadmill workout.

Yes it is a work out. especially tennis, bowling, & boxing. Da Just dance is a good work out also. Da wii does make u sweat & help 2 lose inches & pounds. U just have 2 keep @ it & that is y I feel like I have gained. I stopped working out & laid off of da wii. On yesterday I did it all & it felt good. I am also watching what I eat & I only drink water & cranberry juice.

That was awesome! Loved the video!
Now I must admit that I have used DDR for exercise (hey some of those song have me moving faster than when I'm running!) I have avoided the Wii Fit.
I hope you will continue to review games and let us know when you find a real work out!

Wii fit is fun and you can move around and you feel like you are in part of the game. I will admit when I had a nintendo wii, this was going to be my exercise because I didn't want to do anything else like walk or join a gym. After playing it for a while, it was fun, but it was not a workout and you would have to play continuous for hours to break a sweat and really burn calories.

I like my Wii Fit but I don't think that it should replace exercise? I think that it is a way become more active but I don't think that it can replace real exercise. I have fun on my Wii Fit but I don't use it as exercise.

Wii fit i think is for someone that wants to get back into moving around again. Like after a stroke or some other type of illness. But if you want a good workout i'd suggest to just go for a walk or do some type of REAL exercise. I have to admit the Wii boxing and the dance game is alot of fun and i'm usually sweating really hard after wards. I'd recommend trying something like that to get some real exercise in.

My fiance and I (who are both struggling to lose weight before starting a family, and both have different issues losing weight) recently bought a wii bundle pack and a couple extra games. Do I expect to lose weight from playing Mario Bros? No. Am I activley up and moving (sweating, out of breath, truly working my muscles) every day? Yes. And that's more than I was doing before we got the wii... I am also able to track my calorie intake on my wii (we bought the game "The Biggest Loser") which makes mebe accountable for exactly what I put in to my body.I am hoping with the added activity and changing how I eat I can get back to a healthy BMI.

Also I think it is prevalent that I add in the wii works for me because I have degenerative MS and become fatigued easily. I am also in a wheel chair 80 to 90% of the time so I can take as long as I need to get through a 20 minute workout. :)

I borrowed the Wii Fit from a friend after I got clearance from the doctor that I could start working out after having my baby. I wanted to be able to get into some sort of shape so that I wouldn't be in a lot of pain when I went back to work from maternity leave. I have to say I didn't feel like I was getting much of a work out but after being damn near useless at work for 9 months and then sitting on my butt for a month after having my daughter, but I was able to get back into shape enough to handle my hard manual labor job with ease when I went back.

I don't think the Wii Fit is very valuable to people trying to get into hard core physical shape but for those just trying to get moving and get back into shape so they're not out of breath every time they climb stairs it is very helpful. Also, I do have to say, the Wii Fit is good but the Wii Boxing and Tennis is massive cardio rush. I was walking 6 miles a couple days a week and I still was stuggling to handle the Wii Boxing. I think I shed 5 pounds in 20 minutes. LOL

Any exercise is only as good as the effort that you put in. A membership to a gym, complete with personal trainers, does no good if you don't go. Tae Bo tapes sitting on a shelf gathering dust won't get a person to get in shape. Using the treadmill at home for a clothes rack is not going to burn calories.

Wii Fit is fun. I am laughing my way toward being fit (note: laughter burns extra calories!!). It does give feedback on balance and does reflect your movement, which regular DVDs don't do. The player/sparker does need to put in the effort beyond gaining points and time. I can wiggle the remote and get points, but I have to MOVE to burn calories.

It may take a little longer to burn the calories than a hard core workout/ aerobics class. But then again, since I'd probably pass out in the middle of the class I wouldn't be there!! I think in order to burn calories, a person has to enjoy what they are doing. If Wii Fit works... than work it!

Im not sure kids are the target demographic for these games, I'm 26 years old, mother of 3 whos trying to lose the baby weight without having to join a gym. I love being able to workout at home but hate workout videos, Im never sure im doing them right, but I absolutly love the yoga on Wii Fit, it has improved my flexability and its definently helped my run time. If you were looking for a cardio video game, The Wii Active has alot of cardio exercises mixed in with stregth training. I think the biggest plus witht these type of games is the flexability you have to do them for 5 minutes or an hour, of course they dont help at all if you never use it, I've lost a total of 50lbs since using my Wii Fit and Wii Active

well to each his own, most of the negative remarks i read were from people who only tried the balance games. they are fun for sure. but i do the free step advanced and free run advanced. u can watch t v while doing and most days when i finish i have jogged 3 to 5 miles. not a dry thread on me. dont tell me its not a good workout!!!i challenge u all to stop playing just games and take this wii seriously. my son is 34 years old. he got one. just to see how long it would take to do everything it offered. and he said it took him more than 2 and half hours. before passing judgment, u need to do the whole system, u will be pleasantly surprised.

I did get a good laugh out of the video. But to be fair, I don't believe those activities such as standing still are intended to burn calories. They are designed to make people more aware of their balance and to improve it. Also, the man shown hula hooping looked like he was moving too slow to maintain the momentum and the hoop would have fallen to the virtual ground. I live next to a wonderful bike trail and enjoy useing it, but when the weather is uncooperative, I do indeed build up a sweat on wii free style step arobics.

I never thought the Wii Fit was a workout. We do have fun though and it keeps us a little more active. I don't like the breaks in between each mini workout. Too much resting, not enough movement to call it exercise.

The Wii Fit Plus is great! You can combine the routiens and way you want to for a longer continuous workout. I think this is a great option as well because you are changing the exercize every few minutes from yoga to strength to aerobics to balance so you keep your body guessing as to what comes next. If I use it daily I notice a big difference in how sore my body is vs going out and walking or running daily whiich I try to do also.

I don't see how you can get remotely fit while in front of your tv, three feet from your couch. It's a gimmick that tricks people into thinking that they are making an effort - well, sure, it's an effort when compared to eating bon-bons on the couch! You can get up and clean your house, walk the dog or do laundry and burn more calories, and you'd be a little richer for not having blown your cash on this absolute sham.

I love my Wii fit and get on it whenever the weather is too bad to go out for a walk etc. It certainly keeps me focused and gives me a feelgood factor that I don't get from too many places.

The downside, for me, is the time it takes to change activity - I really don't need to hear the same fitness tips or how to weigh the baby of pet dog that I don't have, time and time again. 40 mins of exercise takes over an hour, because of the segues. If only we could switch those bits off.

I got my Wii Fit in Jan 2010. I had already lost 187 lbs, with very little exercise (however, I certainly do not suggest doing it that way!). I needed a boost, something to get me started, slowly. I really love my Wii Fit exercise time now and think that hula hoop and boxing for ten or more minutes, gets my heart rate up (especially when boxing with my 15 yr old son-we are all over the room!). The yoga, stretching, etc has been good for my balance and posture. I didn't know they were so bad until I started this. And I hated seeing the age I was in fitness-it was 10 yrs older! So once I got moving, I got a pedometer to build up my confidence with a step count. This lead me outside walking, even after dark & in cold weather, because I was trying to reach a certain step count or mileage before the day ended. I became very competitive with beating my own goal in the Wii Fit games too. So that naturally had me playing one more time, then another, and another, etc. to get the number higher. Of course, all the while this was increasing activity/exercise. By Feb 9th, I reached my goal weight, with a total LOSS of 194 lbs. I had gone from 322 to 128 lbs. By mid-March, I was able to chaperone my daughter & her select choir on a tour of concerts & sightseeing through Italy. I couldn't have kept up with a group of 38 teens aged 16-18 through the crowded streets in Rome or Florence (or the airports, especially!) if I hadn't started moving. I wore my pedometer on the trip & we walked almost 50 miles, that included 3 air travel days, between 1-5 hrs add'l travel time between 5 cities by motorcoach, time spent waiting & walking through lots of airports, 3 concert days (including St. Peter's & seeing the Pope!), the rest was sightseeing, which is most of the mileage. No way could I have done this if I hadn't started moving. After 28 yrs of every other imaginable way of getting myself moving, health clubs, exercise equipment, classes, walking partners, etc., it was the Wii Fit that finally did it for me. You will only get something out of it, if you really put something into it. I REALLY put a LOT into it & it worked for me!

Wii Fit Plus lover, here....But also a gym rat. I enjoy it immensely. I certainly do sweat. And while I can appreciate the parody and some of the underlying truths, it is a fun way to move more. What I do not agree with is the hula hoop. I am winded and sweating after that. And I'm not that out of shape. Bottom line is if it gets you moving and works for you, then do it.

I agree with the blogger, it depends on how hard you work on it. I love my wii fit plus. I do most of my strength training on that and of course the yoga, however for the cardio I need a little more so I use the elliptical trainer. The advanced hoola does make you sweat quite a bit for 10 minutes.

I was tired of hearing people say that the Wii Fit Plus was not as good as a workout as traditional exercise that I wrote a blog about it. I understand that it may not get my heart rate up for as long. I get that you can cheat the system. I even understand that a push up is a push up. But here is the thing. For me, the Wii Fit Plus and all the games that go with it are a much better workout than traditional exercise for one reason and one reason only. I do it. Almost every morning, I get up and put in a game and I do it. I come home from work and if there is an opportunity for me to put in Walk it Out and go for round 2 I do it. I have paid for a gym membership that I went to maybe 3 times. Guess what paying for Curves doesn't take the inches off. You have to show up. Walking outside only works if you put your sneakers on and go out the door. Videos etc only work if you put them in. The treadmill only helps you if you take the clothes etc off it and turn it on. And I used to say that this was it. This was the thing that was going to make me an exerciser. And none of them did. does the Wii burn as many calories as any of those things. For me the answer is yes and more because I am doing it. Having the traditional approach available and sitting on the couch didn't burn a single calorie but sure wasted a lot of money.

Since using the Wii Fit, I have started taking my dog on walks on the weekend. I am going to go look for a bicycle on Saturday to take "real" rides. Why? Because I found I like doing it on the Wii. For the first time ever, I feel like I am an active person. And I will not allow anyone to take that feeling from me because they don't think that my method counts.

I don't have Wii Fit. I have Wii Active and I have to say that its a great workout. Maybe its because I'm still obese but I sweat my arse off and my legs and arms are killing me by the time I'm done. I detest the rollerblading because it makes my legs BURN - so, I think it has to do with the person, not the game.

I have to say - movement is movement regardless of where you are standing.

My family loves our WiiFit. I have a very active 4 yr. old, but she has no place to play outside because we live in a 2nd floor apartment with only parking lot around. Her friends love to come over and play the Wii with her. It definitely isn't a perfect workout. We still take long walks to local parks and play, but it is nice when it is raining outside (something that happens a lot in Oregon). I personally get a great workout from using the yoga exercises on my Wii as well as a few other games like the one where you pretend to be a bird and flap your "wings" and lean different ways to reach targets. All in all, for someone who doesn't have access to a gym, it is a great supplement to other exercise.

I have the Wii Fit Plus and I can honestly say it gives me a decent work out. Like you said you get what you put into it. Being a very competitive person, every time I am doing the hula hoop, boxing, karate, or the bird game I am constantly trying to beat my previous score. Because of my competitive mind set I am addicted to beating my score and constantly playing back to back, which inevitably increases my heart rate and breaking into a sweat. I would not use this to replace conventional exercising but it is a great motivator. Now I walk at least 1 mile every other day and do some strength training on the days I do the Wii Fit. The major thing that motivated me the most was seeing my Wii Fit age! You never want to see or hear an older age and I am constantly trying to change that. I have already dropped 9 years off my Wii Fit age in 1 month!!!!!!

I don't have a Wii, but my 13-year-old daughter uses one at her dad's house -- including Wii fit. It motivates her to be more active - in fact, she's starting riding her bike outside more. It makes sense that you can only get a workout if you, well, work at it. However, it does seem like a good way to be more active, along with other, outdoor ways.

Strength, stretching, and toning exercises strengthen, stretch, and tone, no matter what. I use Wii Fit and a host of other Wii games to add variety to my exercise program (so I do the "traditional" kind of exercise, too). Walking in place burns more calories than sitting does, whether I do it with Leslie Sansone or with a group of cartoon step dancers on a fake stage with the Balance Board. Yeah, a push up is a push up, but there's more gratification when you do it with the Wii and get to see your minutes add up or the stars you earn.
I wouldn't rely on video games as my sole source of calorie burning, but it's great on low motivation days (it's a game, not work!) and like any exercise - you'll get out what you put in. If I hop on a treadmill without an incline and a low speed, or an elliptical without resistance, I can spend hours on a "traditional" exercise without a lot of benefit (some, but not a lot). Same for the Wii. If I twitch my wrist instead of throwing a punch, it's my fault, not the game's, if I don't burn at least some calories.

I like the wii fit plus, but the wii active is more of a complete workout. I am a very active person with five boys and sometimes just playing a game to workout fits my life better. I really do feel like I am getting a workout when I use my Wii. For instance, I generally warm up with the Advanced Step for 10 minutes and the Basic Run for 10 - 30 minutes; followed by more of the Advanced Step. My heart rate goes up and the pounds are dropping off. I do think an outdoors work out of the same is much more challenging. I thought the video was very funny.

Okay, I started using the Wii Fit Plus program in January as my main source of exercise and I have lost 25 pounds. Now, I have been carefully tracking my food and calorie intake, but I KNOW the program works. The hula hooping was bashed, but I'm sorry--if you have ever tried to do 10 minutes of hula hooping straight and try to beat your score of yesterday, you WILL get a great cardio workout. Others have mentioned the bicycling and running and the boxing. The bird flying game is a great arm workout, the obstacle course is great for your calf muscles, and the 30 minutes of step watching tv is great. I admit, you get what you put into it, but I work hard and I have seen results. I am down from a size 10 to a size 4 after having 4 children. My youngest is 6 months. For all you doubters out there, I am proof that it works. I have recently added an evening jog and the bender ball workouts but this was only recenlty. My goal is to reach a size 2 by my 10th anniversary this July--the size I was when I got married. Thanks, Wii Fit Plus!

For me, If I start with it, especially when I don't want to exercise for the day, After I do my Routine I set up which is of 20 execises between yoga and strength, I am better then nothing, plus, I am then feeling better, and will do wii active which gets me going and I sweat, am out of breath and my heart is pumping from the first warm up of running. I will then finish off doing a sparkpeople video and cool down. Even with wii fit my heart is pumping and I feel a difference. it is what you put in it that makes it work.

Hi!
I bought a Wii fit Plus about a month ago. I really enjoy it. With knee and ankle problems, I can work on it at my oun pace. My balance was bad, but it is improving with the use of the Wii. I did lose a few pounds since I started. I wish I would have had it sooner. I will not part with it now.
